You have promised your professor to submit your assignment by tomorrow morning. You sit down to write it, but your mind is completely blank. The empty white sheet or the blinking cursor is adding to your stress. You want to complete your task, but your brain is not helping you.
This is what we call writer’s block! Something that every student, writer face quite often. If you also face a similar situation, this article can help you. We will discuss the exercises and activities that can help you overcome writer’s block easily.
Write a draft
Just fill the blank page or the blank Word document on your screen. Write a draft of the topic you have been working upon. The whole idea of “draft” is writing an overview and then editing it later. Writing a draft itself means that the work is in progress.
Also, keep in mind that you will only be able to edit if you have
written something. Obviously, there won’t be anything on a blank paper to edit.
Initially, do not run after perfection. A lot of students look for perfection
and fail even to start their work. You can choose to have nothing finding the
perfect, or have something just by taking a little step. The choice is yours.
Change your atmosphere
When you work on something important, you need to stay away from distractions. Most of the time, writer’s block happen because of the surrounding atmosphere. Try to change your workspace for a while. A new place can bring in new ideas for you.
If it is possible for you to visit a library or coffee shop, visit one and complete your tasks. Other than that, find a quiet and calm place in your home. Just leave your workspace for a while and fill your mind with ideas.
Do not mix writing with editing
As mentioned earlier, writing a draft is all about editing it later. The automatic spelling and grammar checker is helpful. But sometimes, it distracts you from your writing task. It shifts your focus to rectifying the mistakes rather than continuing with the writing process.
Therefore, when you feel that you are falling short of ideas while
writing and getting distracted, turn off the automatic grammar checker.
Completely focus on writing and research and forget about the editing part for
a while.
Take a break
Sometimes, anxiety and stress overpower our skills. Most of the time, it happens when you have a tight deadline and you feel that you cannot complete the work at all.
Whenever you find yourself unable to write on your assigned topic, calm yourself down and relax for a while. Listen to your favourite song, sip some coffee, walk in the garden, and then get back to work.
Surely, taking a short break can give you a fresh perspective of the topic when you resume your writing. However, resist yourself to use social media because it can convert your short break into hours of social feed scrolling. Instead, choose something that includes physical activity. Even leaving your chair and strolling in the house can help sometimes, but not social media.
For any kind of work, especially assignment writing, it is
necessary to take a mental break. Therefore,
relax and practice mindfulness exercises. Have a small chat with your
loved ones, admire the beauty of nature, eat your favourite food.
Play some music
Even if you love to write in a quiet place, listening to your favourite music can help you. Though a lot of writers find music distracting, this trick works.
Most of the time, music in the ambience seems distracting. You
must try wearing your headphones and then write your assignment. This will put
your brain to ease and help you focus. Your headphones immensely cancel the
noise resulting in better focus. Also, do not forget to remove them after an
intense writing session. After that, you will find yourself even more
comfortable with the surrounding.
Choose a closed space
When you know that you have a lot to write, find a place with no distractions at all. These are unacceptable when you have to do intense research and write a draft. Close the doors and windows of your room, and completely focus on your writing.
If you are unable to write at that time, focus more on finding the
sources and research. The more you will read the information related to the
topic, the more you will get ideas for writing. Start with writing the key
points and making an outline of the assignment. Find the sub-sections and major
headings of the assignment. Doing these things will make assignment writing
quite easy.
Put your inner-critic to sleep
When you already find it difficult to write anything, you have to
keep perfection aside and put your inner-critic to sleep for a while. You
should not look for writing a perfect introduction paragraph for your essay at
such times but focus on just putting in the effort to write something.
But do not make it a habit. It should only be done when you suffer from writer’s block. Good writers always respect their inner critic and edit their work accordingly. If you do not find your work good enough, how can you expect someone else to like it? It is necessary to ask yourself this question but not when you are facing trouble writing something.
Change your perspective
When you find yourself trapped and left with no idea to write, analyze your story from a different perspective. If you are writing an essay on sustainable farming, you will initially write according to your viewpoint. Think of agriculturists and analyze how they will write the same essay. This will surely help you bring new ideas for your writings.
When you temporarily change your perspective, you not only get new
ideas but discover the aspects of the topic that not many people bother to
find.
Read a lot
The more you read, the more you improve your writing skills. Good writers read a lot. If you get habitual of reading daily, you will improve your command over the language, vocabulary and get enough ideas to write good quality content.
The more you will have ideas to write, the less you find yourself
trapped in writer’s block.
